Aoyama's first season in the premier class went wrong. He broke his back at silverstone and was out for half the season and was replaced be Alex De Angelis

Japanese rider Hiroshi Aoyama returns for a second season in the MotoGP class in 2011 after a rookie year in 2010 that was abruptly interrupted by a back injury. Having made the step up to the premier class with the accolade of being the last ever 250cc World Champion, Aoyama missed six races after a warm up crash at Silverstone and returned to mark a best result of seventh in Malaysia in his first season.

Entering his eighth full season in the World Championship – his second in the elite class – with the San Carlo Honda Gresini team, Aoyama will be teamed with former 250cc rival Marco Simoncelli as he attempts to fully develop his potential on the RC212V having been deprived the opportunity to do so by injury last year.
